有风度,谈吐风趣,也有教养,
可是他,却写了太多太多的诗,
我想,怎么也不少于一万行,
而且不是抄在旧纸上,可以刮掉
再写:宽绰的羊皮,崭新的书卷,
崭新的轴,红色的捆绳,封套,
用铅标了行,又用浮石磨得光鲜。
你拿来读,文质彬彬的苏费努斯
眨眼间却仿佛变成了一个羊倌,
一个挖沟人:反差如此令人惊异。
我们该怎么解释呢?片刻之前
还不乏魅力,甚至气质非凡的人,
一下笔写诗,就比蹩脚的乡村
更蹩脚,而且只有在写诗之际
他才感觉最幸福,他为自己
兴奋不已,对自己敬佩万分。
无疑,我们都会犯同样的错,
苏费努斯你随处都能找到,
谁都有一份属于自己的错,
却谁也看不见自己背着的包。

Suffenus iste, Vare, quem probe nosti,
homo est venustus et dicax et urbanus,
idemque longe plurimos facit versus.
Puto esse ego illi milia aut decem aut plura
perscripta, nec sic ut fit in palimpsesto
relata: cartae regiae, novi libri,
novi umbilici, lora rubra, membranae,
derecta plumbo et pumice omnia aequata.
Haec cum legas tu, bellus ille et urbanus
suffenus unus caprimulgus aut fossor
rursus videtur: tantum abhorret ac mutat.
Hoc quid putemus esse? Qui modo scurra
aut si quid hac re scitius videbatur,
idem infaceto est infacetior rure,
simul poemata attigit, neque idem umquam
aeque est beatus ac poema cum scribit:
tam gaudet in se tamque se ipse miratur.
Nimirum idem omnes fallimur, neque est quisquam
quem non in aliqua re videre Suffenum
possis. Suus cuique attributus est error;
sed non videmus manticae quod tergo est.
