To whom to give this charming little book
drily polished with a pumice stone?
To you, Cornelius: you used to think
my trivial little scribbles worth a look.
When boldly, in three scrolls, you were the one
who covered the whole Italian age in ink ...
Learned, by Jove, and hard work; for that reason
take for yourself my equivocal essay –
And grant if you will, O virgin Muse, it may
last for all time, or at least, more than a season!
