Varus had led me, unoccupied, from the forum to see his mistress, a nice young whore, as she had seemed to me at first glance at the time, certainly not inelegant or unattractive.

When we came to this place, we happened to discuss various matters, amongst which, how Bithynia was now, how it was managing itself, and whether I had made any money .

I responded truthfully that neither we nor the praetors nor the attendants had any way wherefore one could come back wealthier, especially since the praetor, who was a cocksucker, didnā€™t give a damn about the attendants.

ā€œBut, neverthelessā€, they said, ā€œyou must at least have gotten hold of litter-bearers, since it is said that the tradition was born there". I, in order to impress the girl , say, "it didnā€™t go so badly for me, though an unlucky province had fallen to me, that I was unable to acquire eight strapping men".

But there were none to me, neither here nor there, who were able to place the broken leg of an old bed on his shoulder.

At that moment, just as is fitting for a sodomite, she says, "I beg you, dear Catullus, lend me those slaves you refer to for a short while: for I wish to be carried to Serapis".

"Wait", I say to the girl, "the things I had just said about having slaves, it was a mistake: my associate - Gaius Cinna, I think it is - obtained them; but it makes no difference whether they belong to him or me, for I make good use of them as if I had bought them. But you are a stupid and bothersome person who lets no one be off his guard".
